Support and Movement

The Support and Movement in Living Organisms unit is one of the key topics in the Grade 12 Biology curriculum. It explains how living organisms maintain their shape and stability, and how they are able to move and adapt to their surrounding environment. The unit covers the different mechanisms of support in plants and animals, the types of supporting structures, the structure of bones and joints, and the mechanism of muscle contraction. It also compares different forms of movement among living organisms. Throughout the unit, students develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between structure and function, strengthen their analytical and reasoning skills, and connect biological concepts with real-life and medical applications, preparing them to confidently answer understanding- and application-based questions in the final secondary-school Biology examination.
